St Vincent

Good humour and conviviality celebrating St. Vincent's day, the patron saint of wine and winegrowers each January at Lavardin.

Even though the vineyards have gradually disappeared from around our village, we still keep up the tradition of celebrating the feast day of Saint Vincent , the Saturday after his day(22nd January ).

Each year,a President is elected for the following year to take charge of organizing this festive day with the help of the committee responsible for the event.

In the morning, a service is held in the church of Saint Genest, in the centre of Lavardin, after which the local Winemakers Brotherhood(Confrererie de la Puette et le Franc Pinot) inducts one or more people into their brotherhood……..

The traditional mealing, lasting on average seven hours, takes place in the in the grand hall of the ancient priory St. Genest(now the Mairie). Calf’s head stew (tete de veau) is always on the menu.

During the meal, songs are sung and jokes told, making this celebration a marvellous and lively day for all; and then there is the dancing which will goon until the early hours……’
